Oasis for the Senses is an ambitious and deeply meaningful community project designed to reconnect children and families in Tucson with the natural world. Developed by The Green Room, ONE (Office for the New Earth), and Second Sky, this initiative envisions a sensory-rich garden that blends exploration, healing, play, art, and ecological design into one transformative outdoor experience.
A Vision Rooted in Nature, Healing, and Imagination
At its core, Oasis for the Senses reimagines what a community space can be. The mission is simple yet powerful:
“We envision a sensory garden where all children in Tucson can come together—to rediscover peace and fascination, stillness and adventure. A botanical oasis reconnecting children with nature, and finally with themselves, so they embody a spirit of light and joy, growing into the visionaries of tomorrow.”
This project seeks to create a refuge where young people can move, touch, breathe, wonder, and grow in an environment intentionally built to nourish both body and mind.
A Landscape of Adventure + Play
The garden features a wide range of naturalistic, engaging, and development-focused elements that inspire movement, curiosity, and imagination:
- Shaded play structures designed for comfort and safe exploration.
- Motor-skill–oriented features, including stepping-stone parcours and interactive water elements.
- Curving water streams that encourage tactile learning and sensory fun.
- Mysterious hillscapes with winding pathways, gentle rises, and hidden views.
- Adventure nodes offering rewarding lookouts, small challenges, and opportunities for unstructured play.
Every element works together to create a space where children can test their abilities, strengthen coordination, and experience nature through energetic, joyful interaction.
A Sanctuary of Rest + Connection
Just as important as the adventure are the spaces designed for quiet moments, sensory awareness, and emotional grounding:
- Soft-textured plants, fragrant herbs, and calming, whispering foliage.
- Low canopies and sheltered nooks that provide refuge and comfort.
- Relaxing hammocks, wind chimes, and gentle soundscapes.
- Organic rock formations, misting features, and trickling water.
- A meadow maze woven from tall grasses, leading to hidden art moments and whimsical surprises.
These components create a holistic sensory experience that encourages peace, reflection, and connection — both with the environment and with others.
The Partners Behind the Vision
The Green Room: Designers of naturalistic landscapes focused on sensory, atmospheric, and experiential qualities. Their work shapes environments that feel alive, grounded, and emotionally resonant.
ONE (Office for the New Earth): A nonprofit dedicated to building therapeutic outdoor spaces tailored to the sensitive developmental needs of young children. Their mission emphasizes accessibility, inclusivity, and emotional well-being.
Second Sky: A creative social space offering art, imagination, and playful learning to children in vulnerable communities. Their involvement ensures that the garden becomes a hub for expression, creativity, and cultural connection.
Together, these organizations bring expertise in ecology, education, sensory design, and child development, forming the foundation of what this project will become.
Why This Project Matters
Children today face increasing challenges! Limited access to green space, sensory overstimulation, emotional stress, and fewer opportunities for imaginative free play. Oasis for the Senses responds to these needs by offering:

Our Contribution
We’re grateful to play even a small part in bringing this vision to life. We are proud to be donating 44 trees, 8 large accents, 223 shrubs, 355 ground covers, and over 1500 grasses.
